“Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is Life itself, it is an insane way to live.” Eckhart Tolle; author of The Power of Now.

The Past

What things from the past define you? The difficult telephone call you just finished, decisions you made years ago or failed relationships. You are not your past. The only time that your here and now looks like the past is when you make the decision to let it. You can be defined by past relationships, beliefs about yourself and others, bad situations that have happened or you can choose to live in the Here and Now. You can let that call put you in a bad mood for the rest of the day. You can let that bad relationship make you swear off relationships. You can avoid talk in groups of friends or at work for fear of saying something that’s not received well again. Making all your decisions today based on things that happened in the past.

The Future

It’s the start of the week. Loads of us get that Sunday night fear of the pending Monday! Be honest… did you? On Monday you get up, whilst having breakfast, showering and travelling to work you’re thinking of that day ahead. I’ve done this for most of my life, we all do. Whilst finishing off one task I’m already conscious about what’s next. What’s the next thing on my to do list? What chores should I take care of when I get home? What errands have I got to run this week? When am I going to get time to go shopping? I’ve been guilty of constantly living in the ‘What’s Next’ world; the future.

The Here and Now

When you practice Turn Lights On you learn how to stop living for the future, stop living for the past and you start to live in the here and now. You value and enjoy your good breakfast, meditate and relax in the shower, enjoy your journey to work by taking notice of what’s happening around you and you’re able to Turn Lights On.

When you’re able to get yourself into the here and now you can spot others who aren’t. This is the exciting bit! You can be their hero. You can see people who’ve glazed behind the eyes at the ticket counter, looking board reading social media on the train, looking distracted at breakfast. This is your opportunity to Turn Lights On. Get in the moment with that person, you might know them well or they could be a complete stranger. This connection will make their day and it will make yours too! There’s something that feels intrinsically good about Turning Lights On. This is your week; feel that TLO goodness!

I’d love to hear from you with questions about this blog, about Turning Lights On or anything comment below or email me: matt@tloishappening.com
